asidarap | Day 1

The first sign is maybe different for all of you – the hard ground underneath you, the lack of a body next to you, or no blanket to pull over your shoulders when you reach for it. Either way, when you open your eyes you know for certain you aren’t in the castle.

It’s a little too quiet here, except for the sounds of people around you moving about. There is a strange, unreal quality about everything, as if were viewed through the grimy patina of an old piece of film or photograph and half-realized blurs of images and words seems to hang suspended in the air like solid smoke – there but not quite there.

The group seems to be at the edge of a dead forest, the trees dark and twisted and the ground swirling with mist. A path seems to lead into the depths, but the sky that way is cast with dark umber and hanging shadows that don’t seem terribly inviting.

Not far off, however, is a long stone bridge stretching over a chasm of nothingness and leading to what looks like a city. Far beyond the rooftops, there is the briefest glimmer of dazzling light, gone almost as soon as you see it.

[ Was that shouted at her? Nah. If it was, let's pretend it wasn't. She continues picking her way to the buildings. ]

[It certainly wasn't! Hellboy sighs and trudges after her.]

[ Arya stops after a bit to face him with narrowed eyes. ]

Are you following me?

[He spreads his hands to his sides to indicate he's harmless.]

Sure. You should probably stay with the main group, honey.

I'm keeping them in sight.

That's fine. You don't mind if I tag along, do you? I'm not brave enough to wander around by myself like you.

[ If you think she buys that, you've got another thing coming. She raises a disbelieving eyebrow at him, but contents herself with a shrug. ]

Do what you want.

[It was worth a shot! Hellboy chuckles at her reaction, shrugging too.] You can't blame me for trying.

[ She laughs quietly and keeps walking. ] What are you? [ Tact. Not one of her skills. ]

[It's okay. He's gotten used to the question in his year in Paradisa, and therefore pretty good at dodging the answer.

He follows her, keeping an eye on their surroundings.] I used to be a detective.

What's that?

[Oh gosh, he intentionally dumbed it down from 'paranormal investigator' since she looks pretty medieval... oh well.]

It's a person who tries to find out why things happened, and solve problems. Detectives usually solve crimes.

Oh. Are they all red?

[Laughs!] No, just me. I'm special, I guess.

Were you good at it?

"World's greatest," they used to say.

Wow. What sort of crimes did you investigate?

I was a paranormal investigator. Ghosts, vampires, witches ... that sort of thing.

You have magic in your world then?

Yeah. Not a lot of people know about it, though. It doesn't effect most of the world on the surface.

Why?

It just isn't something normal people deal with. Unless they're being haunted or menaced by a ghoul, most people never have to deal with the supernatural.

That's lucky. I guess.

Sure. Most of the time. It's good that most people don't know about horrible things like that, anyway.
